LBSW & Licensing Reciprocity for LBSW, LSW & LCSW

As of July 1, 2017, there are three levels of licensing in Indiana. Legislation added the LBSW for individuals with a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program.

  • Indiana allows reciprocity for the LBSW, LSW, and LCSW — enabling licensed individuals from other states to apply for a comparable Indiana license if they meet equivalent testing and licensure requirements.
  • A brief overview is available here, and full information is on the PLA website.

Title Protection in Law

Effective January 1, 2017, under Ind. Code 25-23.6-4-1, individuals with an MSW working in behavioral health or human services positions must be licensed. Anyone accruing clinical hours or supervision toward LCSW licensure must hold an active social work license or have been approved to take the ASWB Clinical Exam prior to January 1, 2017, for those hours to count.

Hours accrued without an active license after that date will not count. There are no exceptions except as outlined in Ind. Code 25-23.6-4-2.
